Noted music journalist Phil Freeman has assembled "Sound Levels: Profiles in American Music, 2002-2009", a collection of in-depth profiles of some of the most interesting artists in contemporary rock and jazz. Among these stories, which were originally published in magazines like The Wire, Signal to Noise, Global Rhythm and Metal Edge, are pieces on Mike Patton, MELVINS, SUNN O))), Serj Tankian, OXBOW and the MARS VOLTA. Many of these were originally cover stories, and all are thoughtful explorations that reveal unexpected angles on the artists and their work, asking questions about identity, the relationship between performer and audience, and more. "Sound Level" also journeys beyond the realm of rock, featuring stories on Tom Waits, Ornette Coleman, Noah Howard, Bill Dixon, Calle 13, and Café Tacuba. Each piece is paired with a new introduction describing the circumstances under which it was written and offering further information from a backstage perspective.
Entirely self-published, the book is only available from Lulu at this location.
